Waterpik-Orthodontic Tool

WP-660-thumb

At Kemp Orthodontics we know that for some of our patients it can be difficult to weave through those wires and brackets as you brush and floss during your treatment without leaving food particles.

A lot of our patients have found that when they use a Waterpik they are able to flush out food particles stuck between their teeth.  The water from the Waterpik can reach behind the brackets and wires and hit spots where your floss simply cannot reach. People suffering from gum disease also find Waterpik quite effective because of their ability to flush out bacteria from inside the deep pockets.

If you have any questions about Waterpik or any general questions or concerns about your orthodontic treatment, we encourage you to please ask us at your next appointment!

I just got braces...now what?

iStock_000019408870XSmall

At Kemp Orthodontics we believe you have taken the first step toward a healthier and more beautiful smile but you are probably wondering what comes next. The first week is the biggest period of adjustment, and there is a lot to learn in this short time.  What to eat?  How to brush?  No worries, in a very short time your braces will feel completely natural.

On the first day, your braces will probably feel sort of like a mouthful and it may take time to get used to them. By the second day, you may feel some soreness or discomfort.   If you are going to experience any discomfort, the second and third days are when it will happen. If you do experience discomfort it can be dealt with by taking an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as Tylenol.

If you have any questions or concerns the team of Kemp Orthodontics is here to help you.

Avoiding Orthodontic Emergencies

newpage4

At Kemp Orthodontics we know that even with the best of care, braces can cause soreness to your mouth. This soreness is the way your body reacts to your teeth as they begin to move. Your braces play an important part in helping to create a healthy and beautiful smile but you may experience a few side effects while wearing them that are common and can be easily treated.

Canker Sores
Canker sores are a common occurrence when braces rub inside the mouth. There are ointments available to reduce the pain and irritation associated with mouth sores. We recommend Canker-X gel and we can provide you with a sample to try.

Loose Brackets
If you have a loose bracket you can apply a small amount of orthodontic wax to the bracket temporarily. You might also apply a little between the braces and the soft tissue of your mouth. Please call the office for an appointment.

Loose Bands
The band will need to be reattached. Please call the office for an appointment and remember to bring the band with you.

Broken or Protruding Wires
The eraser end of a pencil can be used to move the wire carefully to a less painful spot. If you are unable to move it, apply orthodontic wax to the tip. If a mouth sore develops, rinse with warm salt water or antiseptic rinse. Please call the office for an appointment to trim or adjust the wire.

Loose Spacers
If a spacer (separator) becomes dislodged it may need to be repositioned and sometimes replaced. Please call the office to see if they need to be replaced.

Remember, braces aren't forever but your smile is!

What questions should I ask during my orthodontic consultation?

When you visit Kemp Orthodontics for your initial orthodontic consultation, you'll probably have a lot of questions. We want you to be prepared for your appointment and feel in charge of your orthodontic treatment decisions, so keep these questions in mind to ask when you come in for your appointment:

  1. How long will I have to wear braces?

  2. How much discomfort is there when getting braces?

  3. Will I have to wear additional appliances to correct jaw problems while I have braces?

  4. What can I eat when I have braces?

  5. Are there certain things, like playing sports or playing an instrument, that I won't be able to do?

  6. How can I make sure my teeth stay clean and healthy while I have braces?

  7. How often will I need to come in for appointments?

  8. How much will my orthodontic treatment cost and what payment arrangements can be made?

The team at Kemp Orthodontics is here to answer all your questions and concerns, and we're happy to explain all aspects of your treatment plan and your expected outcome. Your orthodontic experience should be comfortable, hassle-free, and, most importantly, leave you smiling!

The Tooth Truth

tooth

Our bone and gum tissues are supported by our teeth. If this support is lost or is poorly aligned then our bone and gums can begin to erode. If the teeth are properly aligned the bone and gums are less likely to erode.

Your teeth play an important role in digestion. Before your food ever enters your stomach, it has to be chewed by your teeth. This process is called mastication. The food has to be partially broken down before entering your stomach to be properly digested. Braces straighten your teeth and give you the alignment you need to properly chew your food.

If you are concerned about your alignment, why don't you call Kemp Orthodontics for a complimentary examination?

The team at Kemp Orthodontics will be happy to answer any of your questions about your orthodontic treatment.

You Are Never Too Old

Many people still think braces are for teens. However, at Kemp Orthodontics, about 35% of our patients are adults.  Adult patients are no longer satisfied with living with the problems of TMJ, with crowded and crooked teeth that make it hard to floss, or with the aesthetics of protruding teeth or misaligned jaws. They want to look better and want teeth that work better, too. As long as your teeth and supporting bone are in good shape, Dr. Kemp can give you that Beautiful Smile you always dreamed about having.

The need to preserve your teeth is one of the wisest choices you can make. Good dental health is a key component of your overall health, and orthodontics is a vital key to good dental health.  If you are considering treatment or  you have any questions, please contact Kemp Orthodontics, it would be our pleasure to assist you.

Braces Friendly Foods

One of the first questions orthodontic patients and their families ask Dr. Kemp and his team at Kemp Orthodontics is, "What can I eat while I have braces on my teeth?" That answer is, "Almost everything!" Just with a few exceptions.

While you wear your braces or other orthodontic appliances, you will want to choose foods that are more soft and easily chewed, and you might limit certain types of foods that are sticky, hard, crunchy, or brittle. Great food choices for orthodontic patients include--

Meats/poultry - soft-cooked chicken, meatballs, lunch meats, even steaks and chops if you cut them into tiny bite-sized pieces;
Seafood - fish including tuna, salmon, crab and crab cakes;
Vegetables - mashed potatoes, peas, yams, steamed spinach, beans, and, if you cut them into tiny pieces, you can have corn, celery, and carrots
Fruits - any soft fruit like bananas, grapes, kiwi, peaches, even apples if you cut them into tiny bite-sized pieces
Dairy - pudding, soft cheeses
Breads – sliced lunch bread, soft tortillas, pancakes, muffins w/o nuts, biscuits
Grains – noodles, pasta, soft-cooked rice
Treats - ice cream without nuts, milkshakes, smoothies, Jell-O, cake
Other – eggs, hamburgers, chili, beans and much more

Candy treats and chewing gum are not only bad for your health, but they are really bad for your braces. These foods can break your braces, which will add more time to your orthodontic treatment. Dr. Kemp suggests you completely avoid these snacks:

  • BUBBLE GUM

  • CARAMELS

  • GUMMY BEARS

  • CORN CHIPS

  • AIRHEADS

  • TAFFY

  • HARD WHOLE NUTS

  • POPCORN

  • TOOTSIE ROLLS

  • SNICKERS

  • NOW AND LATERS

  • PAY DAYS

  • BLOW POPS

  • HARD CANDY

This list is just a guideline for foods to avoid. Just remember that while your braces are powerful enough to give you a great smile, each little brace is delicate if you try to use it to tear, chomp, or bite off foods. Choose your food wisely, cut it into tiny pieces, and chew on your back teeth. Soon those braces will be off and reveal a gorgeous new smile!

Benefits Beyond Your Smile

teens

Since it is National Orthodontic Health Month, Dr Kemp and all the Kemp Orthodontics team want to remind you that orthodontic health is much more than straight teeth. When Dr. Kemp creates beautiful smiles for his patients, he places all the elements of the face into their perfect alignment for a healthy as well as beautiful smile. Orthodontic treatment at Kemp Orthodontics also provides many additional health benefits. Here are just a few you might not realize:

• Prevent TMJ: TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) Disorders occur from stress on the jaw joint. Often, people who suffer from TMJ have an incorrect bite pattern or a misalignment of their bite. Orthodontic treatment can align the teeth and bite to remove the stress on the joints that causes TMJ Disorder.

• Aid Digestive Health: Perfectly aligned teeth help you chew your food more effectively, which helps your digestive health.

• Avoid Tooth Decay and Gum Disease: Crowded and misaligned teeth make it difficult to clean your teeth and gums, which can lead to food and bacteria build-up. It's much easier to brush and floss your teeth when they are in healthy alignment.

• Correct some speech impediments: Sometimes when your teeth and joints are misaligned, this misalignment causes speech impediments. The teeth and tongue are important tools in our speech process, and it is extremely important that these tools be in their perfect alignment to speak our best.

If you have any questions about the health and aesthetic benefits of orthodontic treatment, feel free to contact us today. At Kemp Orthodontics our goal is for our patients to feel that their experience with our office is remarkable, unique, and pleasurable.

Orthodontics & Halloween Sweet Treats

October is a month full of sweet treats, from crisp apples to Halloween candy. Now is the perfect time to
think about enjoying these great treats while protecting your braces and/or your orthodontic appliances. The American Association of Orthodontist offers four helpful tips for patients.

1. Avoid sticky situations with your braces and Say Boo AAO Logo 8.5x11aligners. Stay away from hard, sticky, crunchy or chewy candy and snacks. These include caramel, gummies, licorice, taffy, bubblegum (even the sugarless kind), jelly beans and soft drinks.

2. Say no to hard treats - including hard-shelled peanut candies, nuts or nut-filled candies, taco chips and popcorn (especially un-popped kernels). Also, Dr. Kemp cautions everyone, whether you wear braces or not, to avoid crunching and chewing ice.

3. Brush up! Sweets can cause cavities, which means brushing and flossing are more important than ever during the Halloween season. Orthodontic patients should be especially vigilant about brushing and flossing after consuming sugary or starchy foods.

4. Spooktacular news: Not all Halloween candy is off-limits. Good alternatives include soft chocolates, peanut butter cups or other melt-in-your-mouth varieties. The American Association of Orthodontists even offers orthodontic-friendly recipes for Halloween goodies on its website at http://www.mylifemysmile.org/pressroom.

So, grab your costume this Halloween and enjoy the fall festivities.

Protect Your Beautiful Smile

Fall sporting activities are underway. Playing fall sports is lots of fun but can be a little dangerous. Our question for you: are you protecting your beautiful smile with a mouth guard?

Kemp Orthodontics

What is a mouth guard?
Mouth guards are used to help cushion a blow to the face and to minimize the risk of broken teeth and injuries to your lips, tongue, face or jaw. The mouth guards that Kemp Orthodontics supplies cover the upper and lower teeth, giving your mouth its greatest protection.

Here's a fact for you:
Sports-related injuries often end-up in the emergency room. The US Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that more than 600,000 of these visits involve injury or damage to the teeth and mouth. This fact alone lets you know just how important it is to be protected by a mouth guard.

Types of dental injuries that can occur without a mouth guard:

  • Broken or chipped tooth.

  • Entire tooth knocked out from the root.

  • Tooth dispositioned in socket.

If you are involved in sporting activities, we ask that you contact Kemp Orthodontics for a specialized mouth guard that is designed to work and fit with your braces while providing you with the protection that you need.

Two-Phase Orthodontic-First Phase

At Kemp Orthodontics we believe that in certain cases children benefit from two phases of orthodontic treatment.  The goal of this treatment is to create a better environment for your child's permanent teeth as they begin to replace the baby teeth.

A first phase of treatment is initiated to:

  • Develop both the upper and lower jaws to accommodate all of the permanent teeth

  • Develop the correct alignment and relationship between the upper and lower jaws

  • Produce a well-balanced facial profile

A first phase of treatment benefits patients physically, enabling them to bite or chew more effectively.  It may reduce the risk of breaking front teeth that protrude.  And for many patients, there is improvement in self-esteem.  The dental changes that result from a first phase treatment may contribute to long-term stability, meaning that teeth stay where Dr. Kemp has moved them.   By timing orthodontic treatment to predictable stages of development, Dr. Kemp works to take advantage of your child's natural growth and development.   A second phase of treatment moves permanent teeth into their final position, again working with the child's natural growth and development and we will further this in the next blog.

Signs of an Unhealthy Bite

Age 7 is the typical age recommended by the American Association of Orthodontists for a child's first visit to the orthodontist. However, at Kemp Orthodontics we often have parents who ask if their children need to see the orthodontist before the age of 7 due to a problem with their teeth or their jaw growth.

It isn't always easy for a parent to tell when their child has an orthodontic problem.  Even teeth that look straight may be hiding unhealthy bite problems.

Here are some clues that may indicate the need for orthodontic attention:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth

  • Difficulty in chewing or biting

  • Breathing through the mouth

  • Thumb-sucking

  • Crowded, misplaced or blocked-out teeth

  • Jaws that are too far forward or too far back

  • Biting the cheek or biting into the roof of the mouth

  • Protruding teeth

  • Upper and lower teeth that don't meet or meet in a abnormal way

  • An unbalanced facial appearance

  • Grinding or clenching of the teeth

If your child has any of the above signs, please contact us at 615.790.7027 or use our contact page to set up a complimentary examination.

Orthodontic Diet

Oh, no!  It's that awful four-letter word again.  Yes, I need to talk to you again about what you are eating.  The number one cause for breakage in braces is biting into something that's too hard.  At Kemp Orthodontics we desire to achieve a Beautiful Smile within the shortest treatment time possible, but excessive broken braces can extend your treatment time.  Try to avoid hard foods like nuts, hard candy, corn chips, and crispy taco shells.  In addition, you should cut some foods, like apples, into small pieces.

If you need a detailed list of foods to avoid, please let us know, and we'll be happy to give you a handout.  Take good care of your teeth and braces, and together we will achieve your treatment goal of a Beautiful Smile.

Teeth Grinding

Teeth grinding is also know as Bruxism.  We know that stress can cause you to clench and grind your teeth.  Usually, you grind your teeth at night but sometimes you may grind your teeth during the day also, often subconsciously.

If you already clench and grind your teeth, stress could make the habit worse. Grinding your teeth can lead to problems with the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ), located in front of the ear where the skull and lower jaw meet. Some of the symptoms of TMJ disorder are popping and/or clicking of the joint, limited opening of mouth, and locking of jaw.

If you are clenching or grinding or experiencing any TMJ disorder symptoms call Kemp Orthodontics to schedule a complimentary examination. Dr. Kemp may recommend a night guard, worn as you sleep, to help you minimize the stress on your TMJ.

The Why and What of Elastic Wear

During various phases of treatment, small elastics, or rubber bands, are used as a gentle but continuous force to help individual tooth movement or the aligning of one arch to the other. Elastics can be an integral aspect of orthodontic care, so if Dr. Kemp has prescribed elastics as a part of your treatment, it's important to follow his instructions fully.

If rubber bands are a part of your treatment plan, there are a few things to keep in mind. When the rubber bands are place, you won't be able to open your mouth fully, so they will have to be removed when you eat and reapplied after meal time.  Also, if you try to open your mouth too wide, your rubber bands might snap, so be careful!

Consistency is the key to successful elastic wear.  Initially, there could be some discomfort, but after a few days that disappears. If you leave your elastics off “to let my teeth feel better,” it only prolongs the ache and could actually make your treatment slow down.

In most cases elastic wear is prescribed toward the end of treatment.  Remember, if we assign them to you, they are speeding you to the day you get your braces off and will be well worth it when you see your beautiful smile.

Regular Dental Checkups Are Essential!

Are you brushing after each meal and flossing daily during your orthodontic treatment?  If yes, that's awesome!  Don't forget that it is also important for you to visit your general dentist at least every 6 months.  Regular dental checkups are imperative for maintaining good oral health, especially during your treatment at Kemp Orthodontics.

Your general dentist can check for problems that may not be seen or felt, like cavities and early signs of decay. Early detection and treatment is the key to good oral health.

During an oral exam your dentist can check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing.   At Kemp Orthodontics we suggest that your dentist take x-rays to insure overall dental health.  If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, let us know during your next visit at Kemp Orthodontics. It would be our pleasure to provide a few great references in your area!

Braces and Brushing

The biggest enemy of our teeth is plaque, and the most effective way to remove plaque is with regular brushing and flossing.  As you eat, your teeth and braces collect food.  If this food is left on your teeth and at your gum line, bacteria will attack the food and change it into plaque.  Plaque will cause white marks on your enamel, swollen gums and, if left too long, will cause a cavity.  Your Beautiful Smile should be filled with sparkling clean teeth, not white marks and cavities.  The team at Kemp Orthodontics is here to help you achieve the best smile possible.

Expanders

Rapid Palatal Expander

One of the auxiliary appliances that Dr. Kemp likes to  use along with braces is a Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE).  The RPE is a wonderful appliance to use for patients whose upper jaw is narrow, protrusive and crowded. The Rapid Palatal Expander gently widens the upper arch (palate) by stretching the center palatal connective suture.  Once the palate is widened, the suture knits together with newly formed bone.  The Rapid Palatal Expander is prescribed usually prior to completion of growth.  A parent or the patient adjusts the RPE every other day as instructed until the palate has been widened enough. The RPE is an excellent appliance especially to help change abnormal growth patterns.  Please follow this link Rapid Palatal Expander to read more about the expander on our website.

Retention Phase

The removal of your braces signals the beginning of the next stage of your treatment at Kemp Orthodontics.  This stage is referred to as the Retention Phase.  This phase of orthodontic treatment is crucial to maintaining your Beautiful Smile for your lifetime.  Once your teeth have been moved into their new position, they need a period of time to stabilize in this new position and to permit the surrounding bones and soft tissue to conform to the new dental alignment.  There are several types of retention appliances that we use in our practice.  Dr. Kemp will design the best one for you.  In some cases Dr. Kemp will recommend a fixed retainer that is positioned behind your teeth.

The Clear Approach

Braces are no longer just for teens.  According to the American Association of Orthodontist (AAO), for every 10 patients who go to the orthodontist, two of them are adults.  Research published in Psychology magazine by the Kelton Research suggests that having straight teeth helps in almost all aspects of life.  This research reveals that people with straight teeth were perceived to be more successful, to have a better social life, and to have a better personality.  Call our office today 615-790-7027 and for a complimentary examination.

ClarityADV Brace HR-1

At Kemp Orthodontics we have seen a 20% increase in adult patients since last year especially with the introduction of the  Clarity™ ADVANCED Ceramic Brackets.  These brackets are a revolutionary leap forward in orthodontic ceramic brackets. Is Orthodontic Treatment Different for Adults?

At Kemp Orthodontics we believe braces can provide adults the same benefits children receive from orthodontic treatment. Sometimes the treatment for an adult patient can extend longer than it does for children. The average adult patient wears braces for 18 months.  As with children, adults will need to wear a retainer to maintain the results of treatment after braces are removed. We invite you to call our office for a complimentary examination and we will show you our ultra esthetic appliance, Clarity Advanced Brackets from 3M Unitek.  It is the clear advantage that our adult patients are looking for.

Why Might Adults Need Braces?

IMG_7284 2 copy

Some adults never received orthodontic treatment as children to correct problems such as crooked or crowded teeth, overbites or underbites, incorrect jaw position or jaw joint disorders. These conditions left untreated may result in tooth decay, gum disease, headaches and earaches as well as speaking, biting or chewing problems. At Kemp Orthodontics we believe it is never too late to improve your dental health. In fact, 35% of the patients in our practice are adult patients.  We invite you to call our office for a complimentary examination.

Good Dental Health Starts Early

At Kemp Orthodontics, Dr. Kemp knows that, as a parent, you want the best for your child.  That includes healthy teeth and a pleasing smile.  Start with regular dental care.  The American Dental Association recommends that a child visit the family or pediatric dentist by his or her first birthday while baby (primary) teeth are erupting.  Your dentist can alert you to any concerns about how the teeth and jaws are developing.

To have a beautiful smile that's good for life, your child needs teeth and jaws that are aligned properly, creating what we like to call a “healthy bite.”  The American Association of Orthodontists recommends your child get an orthodontic check-up no later that age 7.  By then, your child's teeth and bones have developed enough that subtle problems can be spotted with jaw growth and erupting teeth.

Dr. Kemp will help you achieve that healthy and beautiful smile you want for your child.

Why do I have to wear retainers?

If you recently completed treatment at Kemp Orthodontics, we'd like to congratulate you! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. David Kemp will provide--or has provided--you with retainers. After braces are removed, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers provide the stabilization needed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to their new position.  Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Kemp is the best insurance for keeping your smile for a lifetime.

If you have any questions about your retainer wear please contact us via our website www.kemportho.com , phone or Facebook

How do you sterilize dental instruments?

newpage4

At Kemp Orthodontics all instruments are mechanically cleaned and sterilized in one of our two state-of-the-art sterilization units.  All dental hand pieces either utilize disposable attachments, or they are cleaned, bagged, and heat-sterilized in the autoclave sterilizer specifically designed for dental hand pieces.  All hand pieces are sterilized after each use.  Whenever possible Kemp Orthodontics utilizes disposable items.  All exposed surfaces in the treatment area are cleaned and treated with the strongest surface disinfectants.

At Kemp Orthodontics we only use the highest quality brackets, bands, wires, and appliances.  We always use new brackets on every patient.  We do not use recycled brackets or appliances - Ever!

When it comes to taking care of you and your family, Kemp Orthodontics feel that you deserve the best!

How do I care for my retainers?

Simply brush your retainers with tooth paste and cool water.  Never put your removable retainers in hot water or in the automatic dishwasher.  Likewise, do not keep your retainers in a car or in the hot sun as the heat can warp them.  You may want to soak your retainers in mouthwash periodically.

Kemp Orthodontics provides a retainer case for you to store your removable retainer in when you aren't wearing it.  Always keep your retainer away from pets; they will eat them!  Retainers are expensive to replace, so please take very good care of them.   Remember: retainers are the best insurance for keeping your beautiful smile!

Orthodontic Appointments

Another way that you work together with me to create your beautiful smile is by keeping all of your office appointments.  If not properly managed, braces can move teeth in ways we don't want them to move, and this movement obviously could extend your treatment time.  It is also very important that you arrive for your appointments on time.  If at all possible, please give our office a 24-hour notice to change or cancel an appointment.  Our office email is office@kemportho.com or you can use the contact form on our website www.kemportho.com .  Our telephone number is 615.790.7027.

Our goal at Kemp Orthodontics is to achieve a Beautiful Smile within the shortest treatment time possible.  Your cooperation is the key both to treatment time and treatment results.

Smiling is Contagious!

A smile is a curve that sets everything straight. – Phyllis Diller

People always say smiling is contagious. For every smile you give to others, they then give their smiles to others, and on it goes. That's what makes our job so fun at Kemp Orthodontics.  We create beautiful smiles.  We invite you to visit our Smile Book.

You are taking a very smart step to improve the health of your teeth as well as get that beautiful smile you always wanted. Some foods just don't mix with braces. The foods listed below should be avoided while you are wearing your braces because they can pop the brackets and bend the wires. In other words, these foods can really ruin your day, and send you back to Kemp Orthodontics to get your braces repaired.

Before you get your braces on we suggest that you make a trip to the grocery store, one last time, to pick up the following:

Beef jerky
Raw carrots
Taffy
Pizza crust
Bagels and other crusty bread
Popcorn
Hard candy
Nuts and seeds

The day your braces are placed, the team at Kemp Orthodontics will give you more information about eating with braces. Some foods, such as apples, are okay as long as you cut them into pieces first.  Others, like pudding and pasta, are fine just as they are.

It won't be forever! You can do this! So before your braces go on, enjoy some treats but remember to brush afterwards!

What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?

Orthodontists and dentists both help patients improve their oral health, but in different ways. Dentistry is a broad medical specialty that deals with the teeth, gum, nerves, and jaw, while orthodontics is a specialty within dentistry that focuses on correcting bites, occlusion, and the straightening teeth. One important difference is that all orthodontists like Dr. David Kemp of Kemp Orthodontics are dentists, but not all dentists are licensed orthodontists.

How are they similar?
The main similarity between a dentist and orthodontist is that they both focus on oral health. An orthodontist can work in a dental office and provide the same care as a dentist. So in this respect, they are quite similar. They are both considered doctors, and deal with the teeth and gums.

Dr. Kemp

How are they different?
There are more differences than similarities. An orthodontist requires additional schooling as a dental specialty; the situation is similar to a doctor who obtains additional schooling to become a surgeon. Another difference is that orthodontists specialize in helping patients with the alignment of their teeth, improving their bite with the use of braces and/or other dental appliances while your dentist typically encourages good oral hygiene and provides services focusing on prevention of tooth decay and gum disease.

To learn more about the difference between dentists and orthodontists, or to schedule an initial consultation with Dr. David Kemp, please contact our team at Kemp Orthodontics.

Top 10 Reasons To Smile

ClarityADVANCEDmodel,0

Smiling is a great way to make yourself stand out while helping your body to function better. Smile to improve your health, your stress level, and your attractiveness. Smiling is just one way to look younger, and a fun way to live longer.

Top 10 Reasons To Smile

1. Smiling Makes Us Attractive
We are drawn to people who smile. There is an attraction factor. We want to know a smiling person and figure out what is so good. Frowns, scowls and grimaces all push people away -- but a smile draws them in (avoid these smile aging habits to keep your smile looking great).

2. Smiling Relieves Stress
Stress can really show up in our faces. Smiling helps to prevent us from looking tired, worn down, and overwhelmed. Believe it or not, smiling can reduce stress smiling can reduce stress even if you don't feel like smiling or know you're smiling! When you are stressed, take time to put on a smile. The stress should be reduced and you'll be better able to take action.

3. Smiling Changes Our Mood
Next time you are feeling down, try putting on a smile. There's a good chance you mood will change for the better. Smiling can trick the body into helping you change your mood.

4. Smiling Is Contagious
When someone is smiling they lighten up the room, change the moods of others, and make things happier. A smiling person brings happiness with them. Smile lots and you will draw people to you.

5. Smiling Boosts Your Immune System
Smiling helps the immune system to work better. When you smile, immune function improves possibly because you are more relaxed. Prevent the flu and colds by smiling.

6. Smiling Lowers Your Blood Pressure
When you smile, there is a measurable reduction in your blood pressure. Give it a try if you have a blood pressure monitor at home. Sit for a few minutes, take a reading. Then smile for a minute and take another reading while still smiling. Do you notice a difference?

7. Smiling Releases Endorphins, Natural Pain Killers and Serotonin
Studies have shown that smiling releases endorphins, natural pain killers, and serotonin. Together these three make us feel good. Smiling is a natural drug.

8. Smiling Lifts the Face and Makes You Look Younger
The muscles we use to smile lift the face, making a person appear younger. Don't go for a face lift, just try smiling your way through the day -- you'll look younger and feel better.

9. Smiling Makes You Seem Successful
Smiling people appear more confident, are more likely to be promoted, and more likely to be approached. Put on a smile at meetings and appointments and people will react to you differently.

10. Smiling Helps You Stay Positive
Try this test: Smile. Now try to think of something negative without losing the smile. It's hard. When we smile our body is sending the rest of us a message that "Life is Good!" Stay away from depression, stress and worry by smiling.

This is an excellent article by Dr. Mark Stibich, health aging expert.

ELASTICS: ORTHODONTIC SUPERCHARGER

ortho elastics

Most of our patients at Kemp Orthodontics will need to wear elastics at some point during their orthodontic treatment. The main reason  that Dr. David Kemp will prescribe elastic wear is to correct the bite.  Your braces move your teeth to a point but sometimes we need extra help and that's when elastics come into the treatment plan.  Elastics supercharge your treatment!

Rubber bands are a critical part of your treatment, and wearing them as Dr. David Kemp recommend will help move your teeth into the desired position. Dr. David Kemp may ask you to wear your rubber bands full time, meaning that they should only be taken out when you eat or clean your teeth.  Some patients may only need to wear them part-time, like only during the day or only during sleep.

If you still have any questions about orthodontic rubber bands, we invite you to give us a call or ask us during your next adjustment appointment. Remember, wearing rubber bands as prescribed by Dr. David Kemp is an important step during your treatment, and can reduce the time you have your braces. If you lose your rubber bands or run out, stop by our office to pick up some more or if that isn't convenient we will gladly mail them to you.

Braces are not forever but your beautiful smile will last a lifetime.

Brace Friendly Recipes

MP900438442

At Kemp Orthodontics, Dr. David Kemp and our team understand how hard it can be to get your child to eat the recommended daily allowance of fruits and vegetables. The task of providing fun, nutritious meals becomes even more challenging if he or she wears braces. It's an age-old saying that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. These five braces-friendly recipes are not only nutritious, but will put a smile on your little ones face when they sit down at the kitchen table in the morning.

Scrambled eggs are soft and easy to eat if you have braces. If you drown them in ketchup (which many kids love to do), eggs become even mushier.  The key to a brace- friendly recipe is minimal chewing.

A healthy breakfast provides energy and jump-starts metabolism.  How about a smoothie?  It is not only a good source of fruit, but it's also gentle on braces. More importantly, smoothies are fun to create. You can toss anything in the blender (bananas, mangoes, strawberries, spinach) and create a drink that's loaded with vitamins and antioxidants.

If you wear braces, eating crunchy cereals or granola for breakfast is out of the question: Bite down the wrong way and you might snap the wires or dislodge the brackets. However, you can get your grains and oats by substituting oatmeal for cereal. This mushy breakfast treat has a host of health benefits.

Pancakes are not the healthiest breakfast choice. Still, this Sunday morning favorite is braces-friendly. The idea is to make it healthier by hiding blueberries in the pancake batter.

Toast with jam is ok but how about slathering  some peanut butter on the bread to add some protein. The general rule of thumb is to steer clear of foods that are hard or chewy. These types of foods can break wires. Of course, most kids will agree that toast isn't the most exciting breakfast recipe. Make it a Pop-Tart instead!

If you have any favorite brace-friendly recipes we would love to have you share them with us.

WHAT CAN I EAT WITH BRACES?

MP900438442

At Kemp Orthodontics we know that wearing braces may limit some of the snacks you can eat but there is still plenty of choices for fun and healthy foods that will not harm your braces.

Sweet Treats

Puddings provide a sweet and safe snack while you are wearing braces.  If you are concerned about sugar intact you can choose a reduce sugar.   There are a lot of flavored puddings such as caramel to satisfy the urge for items you should not eat. They can be purchased already made or whipped up at home.  Ice cream and yogurt are also choices; just avoid products with nuts.

Healthy Snacks

Fruits are an excellent choice for a healthy snack. You just need to avoid biting into hard fruits such as whole apples, just cut them into wedges!  Why not try fruit cocktail? It is softer but still has the flavor and nutrition.  You should avoid fruits packed in heavy syrup.

Crunchy or Salty Snacks

Not all crunchy foods are bad; you just need to limit the crunch. Walnuts are a softer nut that can normally be eaten safely.  Small cheese crackers satisfy the need for crunchy and salty. You can also allow pieces to dissolve slightly in your mouth before chewing, to reduce any risk.

Soft granola bars are also an option. Check the granola ingredients to ensure there are no large nut pieces, and brush your teeth afterwards. Otherwise pieces can become stuck in your braces.

If you have any questions about safe snacks, do not hesitate to ask the staff of Kemp Orthodontics.

Beautiful Smiles

FB

At Kemp Orthodontics we know that most people want a naturally aligned and beautiful smile and we know that we can provide that for them. Dr. David Kemp of Kemp Orthodontics has been practicing orthodontics in the Middle TN area since 1986.

Did you know that there is a greater benefit to wearing braces than just straight teeth? You actually gain more oral health benefit than cosmetic ones.

Let's talk about tooth decay and gum disease. When your teeth are crowded or crooked they create overlapped and tight spaces that make it hard to brush and floss. If you can not keep the area clean it allows bacteria and plaques to build up which eventually can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. When you teeth are aligned you are able to keep your teeth cleaner.

Do you have difficulties with your speech? The position of your teeth affect speaking and can make it hard to articulate your words causing embarrassment and frustration. Braces can move your teeth in a better alignment and allow for clearer speech.

For more information about how Kemp Orthodontics can help you, please contact our office for a complimentary examination.

Orthodontic Myth Busters!

mythbusters!

The stereotypical braces wearer – in middle school, with a mouth full of metal brackets – has led to numerous myths about orthodontics that discourage many people from getting braces. Have you seen the show “The Middle”?

The team at Kemp Orthodontics wants to bust those myths.

Myth 1: Orthodontic treatment is for kids. Although teenagers often visit the orthodontist to get braces, adults represent a growing population of orthodontic patients. 40% of Kemp Orthodontics practice is adult patients. Whether you're eight or 80, a consultation with an orthodontist can identify problems with your teeth, jaws, or bite that can be corrected by orthodontic interventions.

Myth 2: Traditional, metal braces are my only option. With the advances in orthodontic technology we now have clear aligners called Invisalign®. Dr. David Kemp is a premier provider for Invisalign®. We also use an ultra-esthetic brace from 3M Unitek called Clarity Advanced.

Myth 3: Orthodontic treatment is only helpful for crooked teeth. Yes, crowding is a common reason to seek out orthodontics but there are other reasons for orthodontic intervention such as missing teeth, overbite to name a few. Dr. David Kemp of Kemp Orthodontics is trained to help with any orthodontic problem.

Myth 4: Orthodontic treatment is too expensive. With the flexible financing that we offer at Kemp Orthodontics we are sure we can work out a payment plan that will fit your budget.

Now that we have cleared up these myths, give Kemp Orthodontics a call to schedule a complimentary new patient examination.

Two-Phase Orthodontics

At Kemp Orthodontics we believe that in certain cases children benefit from two phases of orthodontic treatment.  The goal of this treatment is to create a better environment for your child's permanent teeth as they begin to replace the baby teeth.

A first phase of treatment is initiated to:

  •  Develop both the upper and lower jaws to accommodate all of the permanent teeth

  • Develop the correct alignment and relationship between the upper and lower jaws

  • Produce a well- balanced facial profile

A first phase of treatment benefits patients physically, enabling them to bite or chew more effectively.  It may reduce the risk of breaking front teeth that protrude.  And for many patients, there is improvement in self-esteem.  The dental changes that result from a first phase treatment may contribute to long-term stability, meaning that teeth stay where Dr. Kemp has moved them.   By timing orthodontic treatment to predictable stages of development, Dr. Kemp works to take advantage of your child's natural growth and development.

A second phase of treatment moves permanent teeth into their final position, again working with the child's natural growth and development.

The goals of two-phase treatment are:

  •  A proper relationship of teeth and jaws so that they work correctly

  • Correct alignment of the teeth for a beautiful smile

  • Positioning of the teeth and jaws for an attractive face and profile

Orthodontic care is not a “one size fits all” approach at Kemp Orthodontics.  Each patient has a unique problem that requires a unique treatment plan that leads to a Beautiful Smile.

Wisdom Teeth

The purpose of braces and other forms of orthodontic treatment at Kemp Orthodontics is to correct malocclusion, also known as crooked or crowded teeth, or “bad bites.” Past orthodontic practice dictated that wisdom teeth be removed, especially in cases of crowding. The wisdom teeth are the last teeth to come in, and are officially known as the third molars. The wisdom teeth typically erupt, or break the surface of the skin, in late teens.

Sometimes, wisdom teeth are impacted. That means they cannot break through the gum tissue. This happens if the mouth or jaw is too small to accommodate the third molars. Impacted wisdom teeth can become infected, and some dentists and orthodontists may want to remove them as prophylaxis to prevent possible future infection. The greatest danger is pericoronitis, a potentially dangerous infection that can occur in the gum area around an impacted wisdom tooth, or around a wisdom tooth that has erupted.

impacted wisdom teeth

At Kemp Orthodontics we will make a recommendation based on a panorex x-ray. This x-ray will let Dr. Kemp know the position and size of the third molars and he will be able to let the patient know the timing of extractions if needed. If you need any additional information about wisdom teeth please contact Kemp Orthodontics and it would be our pleasure to help you.

Summertime at Kemp Orthodontics

images

Are you enjoying your summer?  Kemp Orthodontics wishes for you a summer filled with adventures and great memories.

Here are some tips to keep your smile beautiful all summer long!

1. Try to stay away from drinks that will stain your teeth like coffee, soft drinks, or dark colored juices. Not only will drinks like this weaken your enamel but they will also darken your beautiful smile we are working on!

2. Try and focus on keeping your teeth clean by brushing after eating; everyone knows that when busy schedules start picking up, getting a good brushing session in tends to take the backseat!

3. Try to rinse your mouth with water after any meal when you can't fully brush your teeth after.

Remember at Kemp Orthodontics whether you are headed to the beach, a camping trip, or just having fun in the backyard this summer, we want to hear all about it! We encourage you to post your pictures to our Facebook page!

Have a safe and memorable summer!

Party Time!

party

Is your middle school child fretting over getting braces? At Kemp Orthodontics we are always looking for great ways to get “tweeners” excited about braces and I came across this great idea. How about throwing them a PRE-BRACE PARTY?

This will be the party that everyone will be talking about! Set up a candy bar with all the candy they won't be able to eat and let them indulge.

Don't forget the hard corn chips and popcorn!

You can also promise a post-braces celebration. At Kemp Orthodontics we pop fresh popcorn for our patients the day they get their braces off.

The main thing is to be an encourager.  To a tween time stands still but we know that braces aren't forever but the beautiful smile will last them a life time.

Brace Friendly Recipes

cookbook“Comfort food takes on a whole new meaning when cooking for children with braces,” says Pamela Waterman, author of The Braces Cookbook: Recipes You and Your Orthodontist Will Love. “Whether you have new brackets, elastics, headgear, or more, there are great foods you can eat; it just takes some thought.”

Macaroni and cheese is the ultimate comfort food. Pasta is soft, so it's easy for children with braces to eat. The warm, gooey cheese melts in the mouth and doesn't get stuck in the braces like hard or sticky foods. Even the pickiest eater will have a soft spot for this ultimate comfort food.

Try replacing crunchy foods with a softer version. Instead of hard tacos try burritos likewise lasagna instead of pizza unless the pizza crust is soft.  Don't forget your vegies!  Prepare meals with cooked vegetable instead of raw. A vegetable stir fry is a great soft dinner for braces and it's healthy. Meat is a good source of protein but sometimes it is just too hard. A good alternative is sloppy joes. You can use ground beef, chicken or turkey and the sauce makes it even softer. Try adding a side of mash potatoes. Can you say, “yum”!

Don't' forget dessert!  Put all that chewy stuff away and enjoy a bowl of ice cream or frozen yogurt for dessert.

If you have any Brace Friendly Recipes to share please do so on our Kemp Orthodontic Facebook page.
